We recommend that your policy include the
following:
Always ask to see the check writers Texas
driver's license. A valid Texas driver's license or an
identification cad issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety
is the best means of positive, verifiable identification.
Record the number on the check. Also, record
the date of birth on the check. If you transpose a number in the
license, a search for the correct number can be done through
"DPS" with name and date of birth.
Always examine the license. There are eight (8)
digits and no letters in a Texas driver's license. Be sure the
plastic casing on the license has not been tampered with and
numbers or photo changed.
Be sure that the license has not expired. An
expired license is invalid. Ask for a student ID if you know or
feel this is a student at one of our local colleges.
Always compare the Texas driver's license
photograph with the check writer. Also compare the signature on
the check with the signature on the license. Birth date and photo
should be compatible. A person born in 1923 should not look like a
young college student.
Be especially careful of printed driver's
license numbers on checks. If this is a stolen check, we
have no one to look to for payment except the owner of the
account. If someone is forging their checks, you can only help by
verifying the person who is passing the check.
Is the address complete? Obtain a permanent
street address, not a PO box number or rural route and box number.
All areas in McLennan County now have 911 addresses.
The person accepting the check should initial
the check as a means of confirming that the ID. address, etc. was
verified when the check was taken.
